Before I went to sleep on the plane, I changed my clock to Lisbon time. This way I could keep track of how much longer the flight was and to start getting myself accustomed to the time change. I then tried to sleep for a little bit on the plane, while it was still considered early morning in Lisbon. The flight attendants gave us a little sandwich that was about the size of my palm for breakfast. The flight wasn't too bad overall and before we knew it was time to land. It was a little nerve wracking stepping out of the airplane and seeing all of the information in Portuguese. Thankfully, most signs would have the English translation below it, so you could understand it. Once we passed through customs and picked up our bags, we got an Uber to our hostel. We were staying at HUB Patio Hostel, which was about 15 minutes away from the airport. But since we got in before check-in, we couldn't officially check-in for another two hours. We decided to go to a nearby shopping mall to get some lunch. Lunch wasn't too bad, and we headed back to the hostel to hang out in the game room until it was time. I know for me it hit that we were in a completely different country. The weather was hot and humid but thankfully not as bad as New York. Also everyone is speaking Portuguese, which when written appears to be similar to Spanish but trying to listen to it was completely different. When a person speaks Spanish they will include the accents and have inflections in a word, but in Portuguese there is not inflection or accent. So a Portuguese person can understand Spanish, but a Spanish person can't understand Portuguese. Once we checked into the hostel, we went up to our room. We were staying in a 6 bed female dorm room on the first floor. But this technically means the second floor according to the US because what we consider the first floor is their ground floor and our second floor is their first floor. Thankfully, there was this itty bitty elevator that we could stuff our bags onto. I was able to go on it once by myself, and it was just big enough for me and my suitcase. I was originally on the top bunk as seen in the picture above, but after a couple of days I was able to switch to the bottom bunk. Our room was decently sized and had a small private bathroom attached. It was nice having this option, but I ended up using the community bathrooms because they had more room. After we had all settled in, we walked up the street to a small grocery store to get some food. It was nice having this option because we could the community kitchen downstairs to make small meals for ourselves. Then we went to bed and tried to get some good sleep for the next day. |
